Portraits

Years 2011-2012

Paper, gouache
43x61, 40x60

I like cubism mainly because it is less complicated than analytical painting but the result is often more dramatic. In life drawing I always see “hidden colors” and I cannot stand using them. As a result, my work often seems unnatural. But in cubism and fauvism I am free to use all tones I desire.

This is the inspiration for a self-portrait in a ruddy sweater (left on the bottom). The task was to mirror a style of a particular artist or period. This work of Petrov-Vodkin was offered to me by my teacher and I decided : «Why not to try?» It was an unusual manner for me and I wondered how I would cope with it.
